AP says it will capitalize Black but not white

undefined

After changing its usage rules last month to capitalize Black in race and culture stories, The Associated Press says it will not do the same with ‘white’ in its influential Stylebook. The AP says white people in general have less shared history and culture. And it is concerned that white supremacists and nationalists have made a point of capitalizing the word. News organizations have examined their practices in the wake of social protests following George Floyd's death, and there was a quick move to capitalize Black. But the decision over white is, for many, a ticklish decision because the natural tendency is to be consistent with both.

American R&B singer Akon is moving ahead with plans to create a futuristic city in West Africa, unveiling plans Monday for the $6 billion project in Senegal where he spent much of his childhood. The 47-year-old first announced plans for Akon City back in 2018. He has described it as “real-life Wakanda,” referencing the fictional location of the film “Black Panther." Though the first phase alone of the project is set to take three years, plans call for the city to eventually include a resort, casino, residential living and even its own police station.

Global 'Black Joy Project' to be adapted into a book

undefined

The author and educator Kleaver Cruz has traveled the world asking the same question: “What does Black joy mean to you?” Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Books & Media announced Monday that Cruz has adapted his “Black Joy Project” into a book of the same name. “Black Joy Project” will combine images and essays into what Cruz has called the vital use of joy as a path to resistance. Cruz says the Black Joy Project dates back to 2015 when he felt overwhelmed by “Black death and pain.” He now has thousands of Facebook and Instagram followers.

BBC reinstates Rule Britannia! singalong after backlash

undefined

The BBC has reversed its controversial decision to scrap the lyrics of two patriotic songs during its annual end-of-summer concert, saying it had found a way around the problem after its new director-general took office. Britain’s publicly funded broadcaster had initially planned to feature instrumental versions of “Rule, Britannia!” and another patriotic mainstay, “Land of Hope and Glory,” instead of traditional singalongs on the final night of its Proms concert series. The decision came amid a debate over the song’s celebration of the British Empire at a time when critics are reevaluating the nation’s colonial past. The BBC said on Wednesday it said the song will now feature a select group of vocalists.

'Sobering' report shows hardening attitudes against media

A new study by the Knight Foundation and Gallup finds that Americans' distrust of the news media only seems to be worsening. The study of attitudes finds that nearly half of American feel that the news media is very biased. The Knight Foundation says the attitudes are very corrosive, making it very hard for democracy to function when so many people feel they can't believe what they see or read. One bright spot: 84% of people say that the media is critical or very important to democracy, up five points in two years. The study of

'60 Minutes' leads quiet week in Nielsen ratings

undefined

During a quiet, mid-August week in television, CBS' “60 Minutes" was the most popular program. Nine of the 20 most popular programs last week were news or commentary, eight of them on Fox News Channel. Only two of the 20 most-watched programs were scripted series, and they were repeats of “NCIS" and “FBI" on CBS. CBS was the most popular broadcast network in prime time. Fox News Channel was the most popular cable network of the week, followed by MSNBC. ABC's “World News Tonight" was in its customary spot atop the evening news ratings.
